Winter Weather Means Winter Fun For Massachusetts Residents This Week
February is always an interesting month in Massachusetts. It could be one filled with blizzard after blizzard after blizzard or one filled with no snow at all. It could be one were the town 10 minutes away from you gets 15 inches of snow while you get only a dusting. It could be so cold that it’s not safe to be outside for more than a few minutes at a time or it could be so warm that the only precipitation that falls is rain.
So far, this February is shaping up to be a cold and snowy one with many Massachusetts residents finding themselves knee-deep in a winter wonderland right now. As residents spend today cleaning up their driveways with their shovels and snowblowers, weather forecasters are telling many of us to brace for even more snow this week.
Yes, it seems we are getting the snowy and cold version of February this year!
All this snow and cold makes now a perfect opportunity to take advantage of some winter fun. Plus, the extra daylight we now gain each day leaves plenty of time after school for children and families alike to take full advantage of winter in New England even if they aren’t lucky enough to be blessed with a “snow day” off from work or school.
Here are some ways to enjoy February in Massachusetts this week. Don’t let winter pass you by — spring will be here before we know it!
1. Build a snowman
Ok. So this is an obvious choice but when was the last time you actually built a snowman? Like, really got into the act of rolling three giant mounds of snow, stacking them atop each other, and ransacking your house and yard for items that would serve as arms, hats, gloves, buttons, eyes, nose, mouth, and a scarf? You can even make an entire snow family or get the neighbors involved for a snowman contest. Snowman building makes for wonderful memory making for your children too. Those are the moments they’ll remember for many years to come!
2. Go ice skating
With temperatures hovering safely below freezing right now, it’s a perfect time to check some of your local smaller ponds and lakes to see if they are good options for ice skating. Safety is always paramount when it comes to ice skating so please be sure to consult the Massachusetts state resource Ice Strength and Safety before heading out.
3. Go for a winter hike
February snow in Massachusetts provides us with such a beautiful landscape to explore. Gather your family, bundle everyone up in their warmest winter gear and take a walk at your local park. Make it a photo scavenger hunt and see who can find the most fun winter items on your adventure.
4. Take a scenic drive
When all else fails and it feels too cold to spend a lot of time outdoors, everyone can pile into the car and go for a scenic drive. One of the great parts about living in Massachusetts is that you are always within an hour from somewhere new and exciting. Take a drive out to the central or western part of the state to see some of the more mountainous areas. Or, take a drive to Cape Cod or the North Shore to see the wintery coast of our state. It doesn’t matter which direction you drive — wintry beauty will be found.
5. Stay home and stay warm
There is no rule saying you MUST enjoy the winter from outside of your home. So, if you are more inclined to admire winter in Massachusetts from inside, go ahead and put on your most comfortable yoga pants, light a fire in the fireplace, put a comforting stew in the crockpot and enjoy this wintery weather from the comfort of your own home.
No matter how you choose to enjoy it, take advantage of the beautiful winter that sits right outside our door this week.
